I’m no stranger to humidity as a Palmetto State native but NOLA humidity is something special. Breathable, airy clothes are probably a good idea. My trip to New Orleans last month involved a lot of mesh, but natural, lighter weight fabrics like cotton or linen would have also worked really well.
For my first outfit, I wore this “Saint” top. Besides the airy mesh fabric, the reference to their football team made it a perfect fit for New Orleans. I wore it with black skinny jeans (you could also wear denim cutoff shorts) and tied a plaid top around my waist so the look wouldn’t be one note.
For my second outfit I wore a spaghetti strap dress with a mesh cutout detail in the middle. It was super breezy and light weight so I felt comfortable roaming around in the dense NOLA air. You may have noticed that both of the looks were predominately all black. Yes, this was intentional. Although there is no shortage of brightly colored buildings in NOLA (it may be the only US city to rival Charleston in that regard), it definitely has an air of mystery to it. It gives me slightly gothic, black magic vibes and I wanted to channel that energy in the outfits I wore while still being comfy and breathable.
How did I do? Let me know in the comments below!
And one other recommendation – Bring a light jacket. I think it’s always a good idea to bring a jacket when you travel even if you’re going someplace warm because there’s always the chance that when you’re indoors, you could end up somewhere that’s cold. NOLA was no different. To counter the humidity some restaurants and shops cranked up the AC. I would have been cold had it not been for my jacket.
