Color pOp!

March 24, 2016

Spring break has come and gone, and now it’s a mad dash to the finish line. It was a pretty good break though. I managed to check off some big to do list items while also trying out a couple new restaurants. One in particular had a banana caramel cheesecake maki dessert on the menu which I had to try. Best. decision. ever. It was so delicious.

Spring Fever

March 19, 2016

Spring is lurking! Although if I’m being honest it felt like it’s been here all along. This “winter” was unseasonably warm. With the exception of a few snow days, it didn’t get cold. I mean people were wearing shorts and flip flops on Christmas Day?! And this was all along the Eastern Seaboard not just in the South.

I feel a little gipped. I enjoy cold weather (as long as I don’t have to be standing outside in it). It’s cozy. You snuggle up under a warm blanket, light some candles, and sip on some tea or cocoa while reading a good book or watching a movie.

I didn’t get to do that this winter. I also hardly got a chance to wear my scarves or pull out my knee high black suede boots. What a shame.

All that being said, spring has its own great qualities – the birds chirping, the blooming flowers, and vivid, vibrant colors.

I’ve definitely been reaching for my lilacs, periwinkles, and fuchsias more often. My MAC heroine lipstick is going to be in extra heavy rotation this season as opposed to just heavy rotation;)

What are you most looking forward to this spring??

Paying it Forward

March 9, 2016

I’m more than halfway through my semester! *Pauses for dance break.* It may be because this is my last semester of coursework, but I’ve been trying extra hard not to stress out so much about things. I’ve been moderately successful. It’s not really my courses stressing me out so much as it is the decisions that I’ll have to make by the end of the school year – dissertation topic, committee members, post graduation plans. I guess that’s why God created spring breaks. With ours being scheduled for next week, I plan to make some headway on these decisions.

It feels like just yesterday I did a post about the semester starting, and now we’re past the midway point. I know the work will get done and the decisions will be made, but I wish I could fast forward to that time. God give me strength.

On top of all of that, a friend of mine will be graduating from the program and leaving for a faculty position in August. Me and a couple of my cohort members are trying to figure out what we should do for her as a thank you for all of the support, advice, and guidance she’s given us. As women of color in a doctoral program at an R1 university, you realize that there aren’t too many people that look like you roaming the halls. Having each other and a person like Diane who’s been through the same experiences we’re currently going through to turn to for advice and encouragement has been such a blessing. I’m going to miss her!

Hopefully, opportunities present themselves so that I can pay it forward. I have had some incredible mentors throughout my life, and those relationships have been invaluable. Ultimately, I know that wherever life takes me, and whatever I end up doing, mentoring others will play an important role.

Just one of those weeks…

February 28, 2016

Don’t take it personal. There are weeks when it is impossible for the weekend to come fast enough. This was one of those weeks. Fortunately, my Friday and Saturday have been – one could say leap years (haha!), better than my Monday through Thursday. That’s the magic of weekends – they are the ultimate reset button.

Weekends coupled with a cute outfit and some good food (think tempura lobster roll with avocado and spicy mayo…yumm) can work wonders!

Hope this weekend is being good to you:)

Aztec Vibes

February 17, 2016

Every now and again I stumble across pieces that become wardrobe staples. This waterfall cardigan definitely falls into this category. I purchased it from Asos a few years ago and have gotten so much wear out of it. It’s great for lounging around the house in the winter or throwing it on top of simple outfits (like the one pictured below) to liven them up. At this point, the cost per wear is so low that it has paid for itself over and over and over again. I just wish there were a formula to follow for finding these items. Sometimes you buy something and you know that it’s going to be a go to piece, like my chambray denim top from Topshop. Other times you buy something on a whim and it turns out to be more versatile than you ever imagined. I love when that happens.

I’d actually describe this as more of a coatigan than a cardigan. You get both form and function. It’s comfortable and warm but also quite stylish. It makes for a great airport outfit in the winter months. We all want to travel in style but don’t want to sacrifice comfort in the process. This piece lets you do both. And the great thing is you can find items similar to this at Asos, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Zara…you name it.

Pink Peacock

January 28, 2016

I LOVE this faux fur vest that I picked up from Target last year. I mean it’s pink! I’ve never been a pink kind of girl, but I’m starting to appreciate it much more as I get older. There’s something so feminine about it. Especially in softer, more muted shades. Every girl needs a vest like this in her closet. Besides being the ultimate statement piece, it’s an instant mood booster. Seriously, try being upset when you feel like a pink peacock. It’s damn near impossible:)

TGIM!

January 17, 2016

Here’s a few shots of an outfit I wore to church a few weeks ago. I remember being so on the fence about this midi. Crazy right?! It’s not that I didn’t like it, but I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a fading attraction. Especially since Forever 21 has this crappy in store policy where you can only exchange items or return them for store credit (once they have your money, they’re not letting go!). I went to Forever 21 on two separate occasions before I actually bought it. I’m so glad I finally did. The color and texture of the skirt make it a perfect transitional piece to wear into fall or winter. It will also work quite well in the spring or summer paired with a silk burgundy cami or with a scoop neck cotton white or grey short-sleeved tee for a more casual look.

Style aside, this weekend has been exactly what I needed. I’ve managed to get some work done and rest, all while enjoying some pretty good food:) I made some cinnamon oven roasted butternut squash and put it in a salad with some cranberry cinnamon goat cheese and pumpkin seeds (both from Publix). Amazing! I’m grateful that it’s not over just yet though. I still have Monday to help ease me back into the week. Since I don’t have classes on Monday this semester, I think I may need to officially coin the phrase TGIM!
